What is Stromectol?

Stromectol for humans is prescribed against a significant number of species of parasitic organisms. It is actively used to remove subcutaneous parasites, as well as to cure onchocerciasis and diseases caused by other roundworms. The universality of the tool is manifested in the fact that it can be used both for animals and humans. Tablets are used both orally and in triturated form externally, depending on the disease.

The active substance became known to scientists in 1975, but in practice it began to be used only in 1981. In 1997, Stromectol was forbidden to prescribe to people to cure subcutaneous parasites and lice, because due to its side effects it became dangerous to health. Later, the drug was recognized as inapplicable to HIV patients. Today it is on the WHO list of essential drugs.

The main component of the tablets is avermectin, which is one of the metabolic products of microorganisms of the form of actinomycetes. It was isolated by Japanese scientists in the laboratory. After a detailed study, avermectin began to be used for domestic purposes, as a remedy for insects and ants, as well as in veterinary medicine: animal preparations were called Selamectin, Abamectin and Doramectin. Later, an analogue for people appeared – Stromectol.

Indications for use

The medicine has a significant range of applications:

  • used to remove round helminths;
  • especially good for ascariasis;
  • is prescribed during the treatment of head lice if a person infected with lice has a good immune system and is able to withstand the load on the body;
  • neutralizes the movement of the scabies tick on the skin, and removes it from the body.

Due to the nature of its action, Stromectol is not suitable for the destruction of tapeworms and some other types of parasites.

Pharmachologic effect

The components are actively absorbed by the patient’s body, and after four hours they are concentrated in the circulatory system, spreading evenly throughout the tissues, including the organs of vision. About a day or a little later, the substances completely leave the body during a bowel movement.

Despite the wide range of applications, the general intoxication of Stromectol is consistent with the average among analogs.

The action of the drug is based on the blockade of nerve impulses of parasitic organisms that cause paralysis in them, and ultimately the final death from exhaustion.

Methods of using the drug

For humans, Stromectol is available in the form of tablets for oral administration. At the same time, 10-20 mg of the active component can be used depending on the weight of the patient. Given the defeat of worms, one to several doses are drunk with an interval of one or two weeks.

For children weighing more than 15 kg, dosages are reduced by 1.5 times. For children, the drug is contraindicated.

Before using the medicine, be sure to check the dosage with the attending physician and note that you should not drink it without the appointment of a specialist.

Since the active substance is part of many insecticides and other poisons, the tablets themselves have increased toxicity, and their use can cause certain complications in humans.

  • Due to increased toxicity, it is better not to take the medicine in combination with analogues, which, for example, include barbituric and valproic acid, benzodiazepine. Excessive intoxication in this case will negatively affect people.
  • An agent against parasites is contraindicated in women bearing a child. During pregnancy, the active components can penetrate the placenta into the developing fetus, and cause irreversible pathologies.
  • Breastfeeding is allowed only one week after taking the last Stromectol pill.
  • The drug is contraindicated in children under 5 years old, because the effect of the substance on persons of this age category has not been studied by scientists.
  • The medicine is not prescribed for people suffering from kidney and liver diseases.
  • If the active component is an allergen, then therapy should also be discarded.
  • To undergo treatment with Stromectol, high immunity and a relatively stable general condition of the patient are required.
  • Do not combine a parasite remedy with medicinal herbs and dietary supplements.

The exclusion of the above problems is a prerequisite for the drug to act as a medicine, and not as a poison that can only aggravate the condition.

Possible side effects

Most often, unpleasant consequences during treatment are manifested in domestic animals. For a person, the following may be characteristic:

  • Effects that depress the central nervous system, which manifest themselves in the form of drowsiness and headaches. The head may become dizzy, impaired concentration, or even serious complications to the brain may occur.
  • General deterioration in well-being associated with the effect of the drug on the immune system.
  • Fainting, swollen lymph nodes are possible.
  • Like any other anthelmintic, Stromectol can cause constipation or diarrhea, as well as other disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Rarely, but the active substance negatively affects the organs of vision, causing symptoms similar to eye damage conjunctivitis and other infections.

In addition to these possible consequences, when deciding to undergo a course of treatment, keep in mind that the chance of side effects increases the use of alcohol during therapy, severe physical exertion, and fatigue at work. You should not take the pill in the presence of infections associated with helminth infections, and also during exposure to long exposure to direct sunlight.
