What is Chloramphenicol?

Chloramphenicol is an antibacterial drug used in the treatment of various infections, including in ophthalmology and pediatrics.

Release form Chloramphenicol

Chloramphenicol is available in various forms: in the form of tablets, eye drops, liniment and powder for the preparation of a solution for injection.

Synonyms of chloramphenicol are such drugs as Levovinisol, Levomycetin, Syntomycin.

In this case, the synonyms of Chloramphenicol have the same pharmacological actions and indications for use as Chloramphenicol itself.

Pharmacological action of chloramphenicol

Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. The antimicrobial effect of the drug is based on a violation of the synthesis of proteins of various microorganisms.

It is active against gram-positive bacteria: Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp .; Gram-negative bacteria: Escherichia coli, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Proteus spp., Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis, Rickettsia spp., Salmonella spp., Serratia spp., Shigella spp., Klebsiella spp., Yersinia spp .; against Spirochaetaceae, individual large viruses.

It has a bacteriostatic effect.

Chloramphenicol is active against resistant to streptomycin, sulfonamides, penicillin strains.

The resistance of microorganisms to the drug develops rather slowly.

Indications for the use

According to the instructions, chloramphenicol is prescribed for oral administration with:

  • typhoid fever;
  • brucellosis;
  • paratyphoid;
  • tularemia;
  • typhus;
  • dysentery;
  • whooping cough;
  • trachoma;
  • meningitis;
  • osteomyelitis;
  • sepsis
  • pneumonia;
  • generalized salmonellosis;
  • rickettsiosis.

As an external agent, the drug is used for:

  • boils;
  • purulent lesions of the skin;
  • cracked nipples in women who are breastfeeding;
  • second and third degree burns;
  • long healing trophic ulcers.

In ophthalmic practice, the drug is used for inflammatory eye diseases: keratitis, blepharitis, conjunctivitis.

This drug can be used for therapy and other infectious diseases caused by microorganisms sensitive to it. Chloramphenicol is also used in case of ineffectiveness of treatment with other antibiotics or the impossibility of their use in the patient due to hypersensitivity to them.

Method of use and dosage of chloramphenicol

The dosage regimen of the drug is set individually.

  • adults – 3-4 times a day;
  • children under 3 years old – 3-4 times a day, 15 mg per kg of weight;
  • 3-8 years – 3-4 times a day for 150-200 mg;
  • over 8 years old – 3-4 times a day for 200-400 mg.

The duration of chloramphenicol therapy is 7-10 days.

Levomycetin preparations can be used to treat pregnant women only if absolutely necessary, for health reasons, in the absence of a safe alternative.

If you need to use the drug during lactation, breastfeeding should be temporarily discontinued.

Chloramphenicol is categorically not compatible with alcohol. The use of alcoholic beverages reduces the effectiveness of the treatment, increases the risk of side effects and can cause the development of drug hepatitis.

Individual intolerance;
Some skin diseases (fungal infections, psoriasis, eczema);
Inhibition of hematopoiesis.
According to the instructions, chloramphenicol is contraindicated in pregnant women, nursing mothers.

Do not use this medication to treat newborns, as in them, it can cause the development of a “gray syndrome”, manifested by nausea, flatulence, hypothermia, blue-gray skin color due to progressive cyanosis, respiratory disorders and symptoms of cardiovascular failure.

Side effects:

Oral dosage forms can cause dyspepsia, leukopenia, irritation of the oral mucosa, or allergies. The same body reactions are possible with parenteral administration, in addition, neuritis, confusion, psychomotor disturbances and collapse in children of the first year of life are sometimes noted.
